Plants in Sabino Canyon

This is a photograph of three kinds of common Sabino Canyon cactus: prickly pear, saguaro, and cholla. There are more than 2,500 *species* of plants found in the Sonoran Desert. There are many different kinds of plants that grow in Sabino Canyon. This photograph (left) shows three of the most common cacti found in the canyon. The cactus in the front with the flat pads and red fruits is called prickly pear. The tall thin cactus is a saguaro. In between these two species is a staghorn cholla; it has skinny branches.

These pages focus on two very different plants that grow in Lower Sabino Canyon: the saguaro cacti that grow only in the Upland of the Sonoran Desert and the Arizona sycamore trees that grow along Sabino Creek.

The other links share some of the ways that plants help other plants and animals to survive in Sabino Canyon.
